What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional spinal deformity characterized by lateral curvature of the spine in the frontal plane, usually accompanied by rotation. This condition creates an abnormal "S" or "C" shaped curve, different from the spine's natural curves.

Scoliosis is a common condition in the population, and successful results are achieved when early diagnosis and appropriate treatment approaches are applied. At our clinic, we provide comprehensive care for you and your loved ones with our team specialized in scoliosis treatment.

Types of Scoliosis

Idiopathic Scoliosis

This is the most common type of scoliosis and its exact cause is unknown. It usually appears during adolescence and is more common in girls than boys. Idiopathic scoliosis is divided into three subgroups:

  • Infantile (0-3 years): Rare
  • Juvenile (4-10 years): Moderate frequency
  • Adolescent (11-18 years): Most common form

Congenital Scoliosis

Results from congenital spinal anomalies. It occurs due to structural defects that form during the development of spinal bones.

Neuromuscular Scoliosis

Develops due to neurological or muscular diseases such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, or spina bifida.

Degenerative Scoliosis

Occurs as a result of aging and wear of the spine in adults. Disc degeneration and facet joint arthrosis contribute to this condition.

Scoliosis Symptoms

  • Uneven shoulders
  • One hip appearing higher than the other
  • Asymmetric waistline
  • Rib hump when bending forward
  • Head position not centered
  • Clothes not fitting properly
  • Back or lower back pain (especially in adults)

Scoliosis Diagnosis

Physical Examination

Adam's forward bend test, posture analysis, and angle measurement with a scoliometer are the first steps in diagnosis. These tests help determine the presence and severity of scoliosis.

Radiological Evaluation

The Cobb angle is measured with X-ray imaging. This angle determines the degree of scoliosis:

  • 10-25 degrees: Mild scoliosis
  • 25-40 degrees: Moderate scoliosis
  • Over 40 degrees: Severe scoliosis

Scoliosis Treatment Approaches at Our Clinic

Schroth Method

The Schroth method is a scoliosis-specific physiotherapy approach developed in Germany and accepted worldwide. This method is based on the three-dimensional correction principle and includes:

  • Postural awareness: Patient recognizing their own body position
  • Rotational breathing: Correction of the rib cage with special breathing techniques
  • Three-dimensional correction: Correction of the spine in all planes
  • Muscle balancing: Strengthening weak muscles, relaxing shortened muscles

SEAS (Scientific Exercise Approach to Scoliosis)

Uses the active self-correction principle with an evidence-based, individualized exercise approach.

Brace Treatment Follow-up

Brace use is recommended for patients in the growth period with moderate scoliosis. At our clinic:

  • We evaluate brace fit
  • We create in-brace exercise programs
  • We provide psychological support
  • We monitor brace effectiveness with regular follow-ups

Manual Therapy

We help correct muscle imbalances with soft tissue mobilization and joint mobilization techniques.

Treatment Process

1. Comprehensive Assessment

Detailed history, posture analysis, movement assessment, and review of existing radiological images are performed.

2. Individual Treatment Plan

A personalized program is created based on the type and degree of scoliosis, patient's age, and goals.

3. Intensive Treatment Period

Exercises are taught and corrected with regular physiotherapy sessions 2-3 times a week.

4. Home Program

Daily exercises are explained in detail and written/visual materials are provided.

5. Regular Follow-up

Progress is evaluated, the program is updated, and radiological control is recommended if necessary.

Importance of Scoliosis Treatment

With early and regular treatment:

  • Progression of curvature can be prevented
  • Pain and discomfort can be reduced
  • Posture and appearance can be improved
  • Respiratory functions can be preserved
  • Need for surgery can be reduced or prevented
  • Quality of life can be improved
